Forest giants of Aotearoa/New Zealand

In the Arc Collection, we are working with wood from kauri trees, which are canopy giants of Aotearoa/New Zealand’s sub-tropical rainforest. The pieces we create are the outcome of our deep respect for nature and kauri in particular. Kauri wood is known for its liquid-like patterns and reflective golden surface.

Trees that grew millennia ago

The objects in our current collection are made out of swamp kauri that is more than 2000 years old. The trees these pieces came from grew for approximately 1500 years, then, after falling, lay for another 1300 years submerged in peat swamps. Kauri timber contains a gum that helps to preserve it for thousands of years buried underground.

Reclaiming diamonds of the wood world

Sustainability is at the core of our business: we only use timber that would otherwise be discarded. In the north of Aotearoa/New Zealand, when land is drained for farming, stumps of swamp kauri re-emerge after centuries underground. We are reclaiming this treasured material before it goes to waste.

Carbon negative

Giant’s Orchestra is proud to be working towards being a carbon negative company. The emissions of making and transporting each piece are calculated and offset through planting trees at our own native wetland restoration at the Whangārei Heads workshop.
