Bench
The bench was a two week real-time exercise in transformation. Unlike the other pieces in the collection, the Bench was not sketched. It is almost entirely a response to the material, a particularly complex, weathered swamp kauri remnant.
Clean planes and precise curves applied to the remnant’s gnarled form turned a nearly unusable piece of timber into an object that is energetic and assured. The densely-grained kauri top is elevated on a delicate black ash base.
This piece is a potent expression of our interest in letting the wood itself lead us to opportunities and possibilities.
